Special Funding Needs For several years, the Chapel has been quietly raising funds to maintain our bus that transports up to 77 passengers. The bus is a major solution to transporting the children served at the Chapel.
Our growing numbers have created the need to have additional means of transportation. Our 2011 transportation campaign is to purchase two vans. For more information on supporting our transporation campaign, contact 304.232.2630 To Build the Chapel Campaign In December 2004, the Chapel expanded into a new 12,400 square-foot-addition that features a commercial grade kitchen, a cafeteria seating 200 for the Chapel Kids Cafe, seven classrooms, a conference and study rooms, a space for tutors as well as renovated space within the historic Chapel building that includes new showers for visiting workcamp groups, a game room, renovated office space for Chapel workers, with space in both buildings that is totally accessible for the physically disabled. In the first year of the use of that expanded space, the Chapel welcomed 100 additional child participants. To pay for this ambitious project, the Chapel Board established a goal of $1.7 million and named that campaign, To Build the Chapel. To date, this campaign has received gifts and pledges over $1.5 million. Gifts of any amount can be made To Build the Chapel. Special giving societies have been established. The Rosa Parks Society ($2,500 - $9,999). Donors within this society will be permanently remembered on a plaque erected in the Rosa Parks Way within the expanded facility. The Harambee Society ($10,000 - $24,999). Gifts within this society will be permanently remembered on a plaque erected in the Harambee Room (main room) of the historical Chapel building. Harambee is a Swahili word meaning "Let's Pull Together" and Harambee time is the favorite gathering time for participants in the summer Freedom School. The George Laughlin Society ($25,000 or more). Gifts within this society will be permanently remembered with individual plaques located throughout the Chapel building according to the Chapel's long tradition.
