Summer Program
Summer Jam & Energy Express

Summer Internship Information
Group of Students Building a Craft

The Summer Jam is an exciting literacy-rich summer program at Laughlin Chapel. Several exciting activities will be jammed into six weeks of fun things to do along with the reading curriculum. The program offers a supportive, nurturing environment that sets high expectations for children which strengthens their sense of self-worth and lets them know that they are loved.

The summer program for children in grades K-8 is a full-day program. Transportation to and from the Chapel is provided by Laughlin Chapel’s bus. The children regularly visit parks and pools due to the generosity of the Wheeling Park Commission and the City of Wheeling Recreation Department. The children will enjoy horse-back riding lesson at the Painted Sky Farm, and help in the 18th St. Community Garden.

Children that completed grades 3-8 will be encouraged to appreciate reading, the arts, drama, gardening, horseback riding and community service.

At the center of the program are interns from the immediate community joined with others from colleges across the country to implement the program.

The program offered for children in grades K-2 is Energy Express, developed by West Virginia University in 1994 to address the problem of children in rural and low-income communities falling behind academically during the summer months. This program provides learning experiences focused on reading led by a team of Americorps mentors.

The program is wrapped within the Chapel’s Summer Jam program.
